The college was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools as an "A" class institution in 1937 and was admitted to membership in that association in 1957. The college's first four-year class graduated in 1929. To avoid the state Jim Crow system of segregated passenger cars on trains, Shepard insisted on traveling to Raleigh by car to lobby the legislature. It was the nation's first state-supported liberal arts college for black students. In 1925, reflecting the expansion of its programs to a four-year curriculum with a variety of majors, the General Assembly converted the institution into the North Carolina College for Negroes, dedicating it to the offering of liberal arts education and the preparation of teachers and principals of secondary schools. He served as the first president of NCCU for nearly 40 years.īecoming a state-funded institution in 1923, this school was renamed as Durham State Normal School for Negroes normal schools trained teachers for elementary grades. Shepard was also a pharmacist, civil servant and educator. (She founded the Russell Sage Foundation and made generous bequests to several schools.) The National Training School supported Black teacher development in the Jim Crow era, a time when Black education was underfunded by southern states at both the lower and upper levels. The school was sold and reorganized in 1915, becoming the National Training School it was supported by Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage, a philanthropist of New York who was particularly concerned about education. president, contributed some private support for the school's founding. The university is a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. It has been part of the University of North Carolina system since 1972 and offers programs at the baccalaureate, master's, professional, and doctoral levels. In 1969 the legislature designated this a regional university and renamed it as North Carolina Central University. It added graduate classes in arts and sciences and professional schools in law and library science in the late 1930s and 1940s. It was made part of the state system in 1923, when it first received state funding and was renamed as Durham State Normal School. Motors in the 50-hp range should not be expected to start more than 3 or 4 times/hr. If the compressors are running under automatic start/stop control, the compressor should be running about one-third of the time and each motor should start not more than 6-8 times/hr. If the compressors are loaded up for long periods of time and unloaded only for short periods, the system demand is probably too high for the connected compressors. Compressors should also be timed during a period of the day known to have the highest compressed air demand.Įven without noting system pressures and computing cfm flows, the relative load-to-unload ratio can indicate if the compressor equipment is adequate or not. Ideally, a timing session of a couple of hours helps determine an overall average load. It is very important to note that the calculated value of C in the equation is in cfm of free air referenced to ambient pressure and temperature, not cfm at system pressure.Īs more cycles are timed, a more complete picture can be obtained. Air in the receiver is also assumed to behave as an ideal gas and that the compressibility effects of a real gas are negligible.Īir compressed under very high pressures or at very low temperatures deviates significantly from the ideal gas relationship, but high-pressure systems up to 3000 psig at ambient temperatures can be relied upon to behave as an ideal gas. In other words, it is assumed that the heat of compression is small and transferred quickly to the environment. Pressure, mass, and temperature all change with time as air is drawn from or added to the receiver.īut the equation assumes that the temperature in the receiver is nearly constant and at standard atmospheric temperature. Some key assumptions are made when using the equation for air demand, C, as shown in the accompanying sidebar, “Estimating compressed airflow rate.” Compressed air in the receiver undergoes a polytropic thermodynamic change as air is added to and drawn from the receiver. Although less accurate than the previous two methods, timing a few of the compressor load/unload cycles with a stopwatch and noting the receiver volume and load/unload pressures (sometimes called cut-in and cut-out pressures) can yield useful information. The third method is a quick estimate of a compressor’s capacity and the demand of the connected system. When a quick estimate is needed, the time and expense of hiring a field specialist are usually not warranted. The second method provides a reasonably accurate measurement of the compressed air load of a system without having to invest in fixed equipment, but it still means paying a specialist and having data available only during the time the survey is conducted. However, plants usually don’t have expensive flow elements and datalogging software, particularly if the compressed air system is a relatively minor utility. Such flow elements include annubars, orifice plates, and turbine meters. Facilities engineers at some manufacturing plants have installed fixed flow elements in central compressed air systems with electronic datalogging features that can download information on demand. The first method provides the most accurate long-term load profile for a system, especially if historical data is collected and stored over an extended period of time. (See accompanying sidebar, “Determining load profiles.”) There are several methods for analyzing compressed air system loads. And it can also help to troubleshoot a system experiencing problems. It can provide evidence of how much reserve capacity a system has for possible expansion. It can give an engineer a better idea of how actual compressed air usage relates to the theoretical load estimates used to size equipment. However, determining the actual load profile of an installed and functioning compressed air system, even if it is a rough estimate, is of considerable value. As a vital support utility, the proper design and operation of air compressors, receivers, and dryer-filter assemblies are critical.Īir compressor equipment is sized for an application using standard load estimating techniques found in any engineering handbook. Compressed air systems are widely used for a variety of applications, including pneumatic controls and power, breathing, laboratory, and process air. pressurized air receiver to drop from 125 to 115 psig, what is the volumetric flow rate of air out of the tank? Does this question sound like something from the professional engineer’s Principles and Practices qualification exam? Or does the ability to come up with the answer have practical value in the field?Įngineering design and field evaluations often involve the estimation of loads on existing equipment to verify if the installed machinery is below, at, or above capacity. If it takes 20 sec for the pressure in a 240-gal. Slik tripods are ideal for anyone looking for a well-built, dependable tripod. Furthermore, with their large maximum height, these are ideal for heavy camera setups due to their weight support. These are an excellent choice for both amateurs and professionals who want a tripod with a high durability. Slik tripods are also extremely versatile. As a result, they are ideal for people who want a dependable tripod that will not break the bank. Their tripods are not only dependable and well-made, but they also come at an excellent price. Slik, a leading manufacturer of tripods, is one of the best on the market. It’s critical to choose a good tripod brand, as some are quite bad. There are, however, a few options that are not necessarily the best. There are a plethora of tripods on the market, which can be purchased in a variety of styles. If you are looking for a specific tripod made in Japan, you may want to check the company’s website or contact customer service to inquire about the country of origin. However, many tripods are made in Japan, as the country has a long history of manufacturing high-quality camera equipment. There is no definitive answer to this question, as there is no one company that manufactures all tripods. A tripod’s three legs typically extend 50 to 63 inches (126–160 cm) from the ground. While on the move, monopods are ideal for adjusting the stability of long lenses. Tripods make excellent long-exposure photography tools. With the Joby Gorillapod, you can easily and comfortably film while on the go. Overall, it is a light, sturdy, and very high-quality tripod that will look great on most platforms. A tripod requires 40 to 50,000 different components to be assembled. Vitec Group, the parent company of the camera accessory brand Manfrotto, has recently added two more well-known brands to its portfolio: JOBY and Lowepro. To be specific, this brand is marketed in the United States and abroad under the brand name Induro. Manfrotto tripods are well-known for their high quality and low cost, making them one of the industry’s most popular and cost-effective options. Just don’t be surprised to see “Made in China” on the label.Īs a brand, Oben emphasizes field use over clever design, and its products undergo extensive field testing in order to be field-ready. So, if you’re looking for a high-quality tripod at a great price, Slik is definitely worth considering. That’s not to say that there are no quality control issues, but Slik does have a team of quality control experts who inspect every tripod that comes off the assembly line. It is much cheaper to manufacture in China, and Slik is able to pass those savings on to the consumer. Slik does have a small factory in Japan, but it is primarily used for research and development, and less than 10% of their tripods are made there. Despite the fact that Slik is a Japanese company, the vast majority of their tripods are actually made in China. So, where are Slik tripods made? The answer might surprise you. Slik is a Japanese company that has been making tripods since 1957, and they have a well-deserved reputation for quality. If you’re in the market for a new tripod, the name Slik is likely to come up. We also see that common conceptions of STEM education appear across roles and contexts, and these could provide starting points for these discussions. This is especially important in the current reform contexts related to STEM education. What we do see as essential is that those working in the same system explore the common elements that are being attributed to STEM education and co-construct a vision that provides opportunities for all their students to attain STEM-related goals. Given the variety of institutionalized practices and school contexts within which STEM education is enacted, we are not convinced that a single worldwide definition of STEM education is critical. Two important attributes of STEM education addressed in the literature appeared infrequently across all contexts and role groups: students’ use of technology and the potential of STEM-focused education to provide access and opportunities for all students’ successful participation in STEM. We also identified differences across educators in different roles (e.g., non-STEM teacher, administrator). Conceptualizations of STEM education were related to educational contexts, which included the STEM education professional development activities in which educators engaged. Three themes were included on over 70% of the 34 concept maps: interdisciplinary connections the need for new, ambitious instructional practices in enacting a STEM approach and the engagement of students in real-world problem solving. Concept maps and interview transcripts from 34 educators holding different roles were analyzed: STEM and non-STEM teachers, administrators, and STEM professional development providers. Sensemaking theory framed our analysis of ideas that were being selected and retained in relation to professional learning experiences in three contexts: two traditional middle schools, a STEM-focused school, and state-wide STEM professional development. The purpose of this study was to investigate the commonalities and variations in educators’ conceptualizations of STEM education. Despite increasing attention to STEM education worldwide, there is considerable uncertainty as to what constitutes STEM education and what it means in terms of curriculum and student outcomes. You can also accept ACH bank transfers or gift card payments.
